Fringe Cleaning & Care. Rochester & Buffalo, NY
The most neglected — and most visible — part of your rug. We hand-clean, whiten, groom, and restore fringe to its original condition.
Why Fringe Cleaning Matters
Fringe is the first thing people notice about a rug — and often the last thing anyone cleans properly. Dirty, yellowed, or matted fringe can make an otherwise beautiful rug look neglected, no matter how well the main field has been cared for. Yet most cleaning services either rush through the fringe with the same machine process as the rug body, or ignore it entirely.
We treat fringe as its own discipline. Because it is. The fibre composition, how it's attached, and how it's been maintained all affect how it should be cleaned. Getting it wrong causes tangling, fraying, yellowing, or — in the worst cases — fringe that falls apart entirely.
What We Do to Your Fringe
- Pre-inspection: We check the fringe fibre (cotton, wool, silk, synthetic), its condition, and how it's attached to the rug body.
- Hand-cleaning: Fringe is washed by hand using chemistry matched to its specific fibre — not the same as the rug body in all cases.
- Whitening treatment: For yellowed or discoloured fringe, we apply a brightening treatment that restores whiteness without weakening the fibre.
- Detangling & combing: Each strand is carefully separated and combed out after washing.
- Grooming: Fringe is groomed in the correct direction and allowed to dry flat, preventing curling and matting.
- Post-inspection: We check the fringe under good light before returning the rug — it should look fresh, even, and clean throughout.
Fringe Repair & Restoration
Beyond cleaning, we offer fringe repair services for rugs where the fringe has been damaged, shortened, frayed, or is beginning to unravel. This includes:
- Fringe re-attachment — securing loose fringe back to the rug's foundation
- Fringe replacement — matching and replacing heavily damaged sections
- Overcasting — reinforcing rug edges that are beginning to unravel
- Side cord repair — restoring the protective edge wrapping on Oriental and Persian rugs
If your rug needs repair work, we'll discuss the options and costs with you before we begin. Repairs are always quoted separately and require your approval first.
Included With Every Full Wash
Fringe cleaning and grooming are included as standard with every complete rug wash service. You don't need to request it separately — we treat the fringe as part of the whole piece, because that's what it is.
If your rug needs fringe whitening, repair, or restoration beyond the standard clean, we'll identify this during our pre-inspection and discuss it with you before proceeding.
