Rug Repair. Rochester & Buffalo, NY
A rug that's unravelling, moth-damaged, or falling apart at the edges doesn't have to be replaced. The right repair, done properly, extends its life significantly.
When Repair Is the Right Choice
Rugs wear from the edges inward. The foundation — the warps and wefts that hold the entire structure together — is most vulnerable at the sides, ends, and fringe. Once a rug begins to unravel, the damage accelerates with every step taken on it. What starts as a small loose thread can become a structural failure affecting the rug's entire border if left unaddressed.
The earlier damage is caught and repaired, the simpler and less expensive the fix. We assess every rug we receive for repair needs and raise any issues we find before proceeding with cleaning — so you're always informed and in control of what happens next.
Repair Services We Offer
- Fringe replacement: Damaged or missing fringe replaced with correctly matched material, reattached securely to the rug's foundation.
- Fringe re-attachment: Loose or detaching fringe secured back to the foundation before further unravelling occurs.
- Edge overcasting / side cord repair: The protective wrapping along rug sides is restored or replaced — preventing lateral unravelling of the pile.
- Binding & serging: Worn or missing edge binding repaired or replaced, keeping the rug's border intact.
- Foundation repair: Damaged warp or weft threads re-woven to restore structural integrity to compromised areas.
- Moth damage restoration: Moths attack wool pile from beneath. Damaged sections are assessed and repaired where the extent of damage allows.
- Hole & tear repair: Visible holes or tears re-woven and blended to minimise their appearance.
- Pile reweaving: Worn or missing pile sections rebuilt using matched wool — most effective on quality hand-knotted rugs.
What to Expect From the Assessment
All repair work is assessed and quoted separately from cleaning. We won't begin repairs without your approval. Our assessment covers:
- Identifying all areas of damage and their severity
- Determining which repairs are feasible and which aren't (we'll be honest about this)
- Recommending priority repairs — what needs doing now vs what can wait
- Providing a fixed quote for each repair item
You decide what to approve. There's no pressure to proceed with every recommendation.
Repair & Clean — Better Together
Rug repair is most effective when done in combination with cleaning. Cleaning reveals damage that isn't visible under soil — and repairing before cleaning ensures the repaired areas aren't subjected to unnecessary stress during the wash process. We sequence the work appropriately and keep you informed throughout.
