Every rug that comes through our doors — regardless of fibre, size, or condition — goes through this same thorough process. No shortcuts. No skipped steps.
When we have your rug at our facility, we give it a thorough inspection before anything else. We look for pile loss, colour loss or "bleeding", fringe or side cord damage, moth damage, pet accidents, and other conditions. The rug's condition often dictates how we'll clean it.
We take photographs to document the rug's characteristics and tag your rug so we can track it precisely throughout the entire process from start to finish.
Your grandmother may have done this with a rug beater on a clothesline. The principle is the same — we remove grit, debris, and loose soil from the rug before washing. This "dry soil" would turn to mud during the wash if not removed first, making cleaning harder and potentially damaging the fibres.
We use a tumble duster that gently allows debris to fall free from your rug. We can also use compressed air, brushing, vibrating, and vacuuming to accomplish thorough dust removal.
This is truly a spa day for your rug! Hand-knotted and machine-woven rugs especially benefit from a full soak in our 1,200-gallon wash tub. The immersion helps loosen deeply embedded soils and stains that nothing else can reach.
We use a variety of soft brushes along with precisely matched shampoo to gently agitate your rug and lift soils to the surface, where we can rinse them away completely.
Our 14-foot centrifuge extracts the water from your rug using centrifugal force — similar to the spin cycle in your washing machine, but purpose-built for rugs of all sizes. This step removes the bulk of the water quickly and efficiently.
We can also give your rug an additional rinse with clear water during extraction — removing even more soil and odour, producing outstanding results that a simple press or squeeze could never achieve.
After extraction, we groom your rug. Most rugs have a "direction" — a lay of the pile that determines how they look and feel at their best. Grooming in the proper direction dramatically improves appearance and texture.
It's a bit like petting a cat or dog — go against the direction of their fur, and they look like a mess. Go with it, and they look perfectly natural. We make sure your rug's pile lays the right way before it goes to dry.
Your rug is then placed in our climate-controlled dry room — essentially a giant clothes dryer. Hot, dry air is pumped in while cool, moist air is exhausted out. Fans circulate the dry air around every part of the rug.
Predictable, efficient, controlled drying is one of the most important steps — it prevents mildew, maintains the rug's shape, and results in a noticeably softer feel. Proper drying is something most rug owners never consider, but we obsess over it.
After your rug is dry, we check it thoroughly. Our technicians are trained to look at the rug as if it were new in a showroom — asking what would need to be improved to make it look that way again.
At this step we may apply specialised spot stain removal, lightly shear or trim the rug, and check for any remaining odours. When finished, your rug should smell like fresh, clean wool — and nothing else. If it doesn't meet our standard, we re-wash it completely.
Protection can mean many things. At its core, it's about ensuring your rug stays in the best possible condition for as long as possible after it leaves our hands.
